About the Partnership

Local Nature Partnership

Warwickshire Coventry and Solihull Local Nature Partnership (LNP) is a partnership of local organisations with the purpose of facilitating delivery of benefits for nature.

The LNP was established in July 2012, following the Government's Natural Environment White Paper, The Natural Choice: Securing the Value of Nature. As defined by Defra, the LNP's purposes are:

  • Drive positive change in the local natural environment, taking a strategic view of the challenges and opportunities involved and identifying ways to manage it as a system for the benefit of nature, people and the economy.

  • Contribute to achieving the Government’s national environmental objectives locally, including the identification of local ecological networks, alongside addressing local priorities.

  • Become local champions influencing decision-making relating to the natural environment and its value to social and economic outcomes, in particular, through working closely with local authorities, Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs) and Health and Wellbeing Boards (HWBs).

Strategic Vision

The vision of the Warwickshire, Coventry and Solihull Local Nature Partnership is:

The natural, historic, urban, and farmed environments are in a vibrant condition that enables the economy, nature and people to thrive. A place where everyone is empowered to reverse wildlife losses and create beneficial connections with nature and where nature can flourish in a stable climate.

A Shadow Board of the LNP was established in October 2012, and the full Board started in January 2013. The Strategic Vision was approved in October 2013 and has since been updated in February 2023.

Nature Improvement Areas

Nature Improvement Areas (NIAs) are landscape-scale initiatives aiming to ensure land within the NIA benefits nature, people and the economy. The vision for NIAs was set out by Defra. NIAs are areas that have opportunities to create sustainable improvements for ecological networks by connecting, restoring and creating wildlife sites, alongside benefits to urban areas and local communities.

Local Nature Partnerships can identify new, locally determined NIAs within their areas based on criteria from Defra, and Local Planning Authorities can recognise NIAs in their plans.

Warwickshire, Coventry and Solihull Local Nature Partnership have set up the Tame Valley Wetlands NIA, following 29km of the river Tame and its lower tributaries between Birmingham and Tamworth.

Our Board

The Warwickshire, Coventry and Solihull Local Nature Partnership Board is made up of representatives from seven member organisations. Our board oversees the strategic vision and objectives of the Partnership.
